Abstract

1. Scope--This SAE Standard serves as a guide for testing procedures and as a publication providing a record of current production batteries, their ratings, and container description. Any battery with planned significant usage may be submitted for inclusion in the Tables of use. (Reference Section 5 and Chart A1 of Appendix A.) 1.1 The ratings submitted are to be based on procedures described in this document. The ratings submitted must be of a level that when any subsequent significant sample is tested in accordance with this document, that at least 90% of the batteries shall meet the ratings. The choice of 90% compliance recognizes that batteries consist of many plates and require chemical-electrical formation procedures and small variations in test conditions and procedures can affect the performance of individual batteries. 1.2 The ratings and container descriptions listed in Chart A1 of Appendix A are provided as a reference of current battery usage. It is recommended that potential suppliers and customers establish specification and compliance requirements prior to any sample evaluation since individual customer requirements may vary from this document. 1.3 Applications--This document applies to lead-acid types of storage batteries used in motor vehicles, motorboats, tractors, and starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) applications which use regulated charging systems.
