Abstract

This European Standard specifies a method for the determination of drainability of flocculated sludges. It applies to all kinds of sludges provided their solids are larger than 500 µm in size. That is why, the test should preferably be performed on sludges first flocculated. Sewage sludges can be producted by several processes (sewage primary sedimentation, activated sludge sedimentation, aerobic or anaerobic digestion, drinking water clarification,...). Their solid contents cover a wide range from 1 to 5%. The physical state of sludge is liquid. Synthetic polymers used for flocculation of sludges have different structures (linear, branched, cross-linked), form (powder, beads, liquid, emulsion), charge density (from 0 to 90% ionicity) and molecular weight (from 5 to 15 106 Da).
