Abstract

This Standard specifies strength, durability, stability and general safety requirements for freestanding bunk beds and freestanding elevated beds for domestic and non-domestic use. These include material, construction, design, marking and labelling and performance requirements. Some requirements in this document may also be used to evaluate beds that are “built-in”. Strength, durability and stability requirements for other furniture items that may form an integral part of the design of a bed (e.g. a desk or storage unit) are not specifically addressed in this document. However, the general safety requirements are still applicable to those items. Requirements for “play features” are addressed in this document. The strength and durability requirements are intended to represent use by — (a) 1 person (1 sleeping position) per single or king single sized sleeping surface; or (b) 2 persons (2 sleeping positions) per double, queen or king sized sleeping surface. This document does not apply to beds designed for special purposes e.g. for use in trains, planes or environments requiring specialized design features. This document includes the following levels of test severity: (i) Level 1 for normal/domestic use for people up to approximately 75 kg. (ii) Level 2 for severe domestic/commercial use for people up to approximately 110 kg. If unspecified, a requirement is applicable at both levels. NOTE Where this document uses the term “bunk bed” or “bed”, it includes all beds within the scope of this document, i.e. both bunk beds and elevated beds.
