Abstract

This Code prescribes m1mmum requirements for the materials, design, fabrication, assembly, test and inspection of petroleum refinery pressure and vacuum piping systems. Except as excluded in Par. 300.1.4, this Code covers all piping within the property limits of a petroleum refinery, loading terminal, gas processing plant, bulk plant, compounding plant, or refinery tank farm, any of which are engaged in the processing or handling of petroleum and related products. It also covers interconnecting lines between separate sections of a refinery. This Code applies to piping systems handling all fluids, including fluidized solids, and to all types of services including oil, gas, steam, air, water, chemicals, and refrigerants (except as specified or excluded in Par. 300.1. 3 and 300.1.4). Package refrigeration unit piping may be designed and constructed in accordance with ASA B31.5 except that impact test requirements of Par. 323.2.1 and 323.2.2 shall apply. This Code excludes the following: (a) portions of steam, feedwater, blowoff, or other piping within the jurisdiction of Section I (Power Boilers) of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (b) heater tubes, tube fittings and headers including connection for piping (c) pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, and other such equipment, including internal piping and connections for piping (d) piping designed for internal pressures: (1) at or above 0 psig but less than 5 psig regardless of temperature, (2) at or above 5 psig but less than 15 psig if the design temperature is in the range of -20F to 650F inclusive (e) piping located on refinery property which has been set aside for cross-country piping transmitting oil or gas through, to, or from the refinery. Piping consists of pipe, flanges, bolting, gaskets, valves, fittings, the pressure containing parts of other components such as expansion joints, swivel joints, and strainers, and devices which serve such purposes as mixing, separating, snubbing, distributing, metering, or controlling flow. It also includes pipe supporting elements. Piping does not include support structures such as frames of buildings, stanchions, or foundations, nor any equipment such as defined in Par. 300.1.4(b) and (c).
