Abstract

This standard covers the design, construction, and location of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) installations at marine and pipeline terminals, natural gas processing plants, refineries, petrochemical plants, and tank farms. This standard covers storage vessels, loading and unloading systems, piping, and related equipment. The standard does not cover the design, construction, or relocation of frozen earth pits, underground storage caverns or wells, underground or mounded storage tanks, and aboveground concrete storage tanks. Information presented in this standard in the form of recommendations (designated by the use of the word should) as opposed to mandates (designated by the use of the word shall) are to be weighed against differing conditions over a wide range of facilities. The size and type of facility; related facilities on the site; commercial, industrial, and residential population density in the sur-rounding area; terrain and climate conditions; and type of LPG handled shall be considered. Generally speak¬ing, the larger the installation and the greater the population density of the surrounding area, the more stringent are the design requirements. Design and construction considerations peculiar to refrigerated storage, including autorefrigerated storage, are covered in Section 9 of this standard. The values stated in U.S. customary units are to be regarded as the standard. This standard does not apply to the following LPG installations: a. Those covered by API Standard 2508. b. Those covered by NFPA Standards 58 and 59. c. U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) con¬tainers. d. Gas utility company facilities, refinery equipment, gas processing equipment, and transfer systems (from process equipment) preceding LPG storage. e. Those tanks with less than 2000 gallons storage capacity.
