Abstract

1.1 Scope Motor fuels resulting from a blend of 10 percent denatured anhydrous ethanol and 90 percent gasoline have properties similar to those of gasoline. There are differences, however, which must be recognized by those who store, handle, or provide fire protection for the blended product. The facilities required for the handling of ethanol and ethanol blend are also similar to those for gasoline, with some minor exceptions. This publication describes recommended practices for the storing, handling, and fire protection of ethanol and gasoline-ethanol blends at distribution terminals and service stations. NOTE: Throughout this publication, denatured anhydrous ethanol will be referred to as ethanol. The motor fuels resulting from a blend of 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline will be referred to as gasoline-ethanol blend or ethanol blend. Anhydrous ethanol that has not been denatured will be referred to as neat ethanol.
