This guide specifies basic principles, application objectives, functions, performances, and test methods for alternating current (ac) standard signal sources with digital output. This guide applies to ac standard signal sources that provide standardized digital voltage/current output signals in the form of a formatted digital output stream, which are used to simulate the output of an electronic instrument transformer or merging unit (MU) when testing intelligent electronic devices (IEDs). For ac standard signal sources, IEC 61869-9 is applicable.6  Purpose  The purpose of this guide is to specify the technical requirements for the design and application of ac standard signal sources with digital output, allowing utilities, system integrators, manufacturers, and other related entities to specify the overall performance and application objectives of ac standard signal sources. This guide provides a resource for readers on the concepts, capabilities, and applications of ac standard signal sources with digital output and the benefits they offer in promoting the development of digital substation technology by serving as a bridge between the digital data and the IED. 6 Information on reference can be found in Clause 2.
